More and more online services are offered by organizations, companies and administrations to benefit from the advantages of speed and versatility that this system provides. Unfortunately, all these new benefits are only available to those with the capacity to use these modern technologies rarely found among elderly.

The key principle of SOCIALIZE is the ambition to create a complete technological solution with a decidedly operative approach will simplify the modalities with which elderly people have access to dedicated services, with particular focus on the age group from 55 to 80 with a basic or already consolidated knowledge of Information Technologies and use of electronic devices, already accessing internet services and knowing at least basic computer fundamental because of their working experience or everyday job, living in a technology-served environment. As a second objective SOCIALIZE will offer means of integration for organizations offering services to elderly people into the envisaged system (“secondary” end users).

The SOCIALIZE project develops itself in three technologic macro areas as it foresees to implement:

        A service-oriented software architecture to supply network services with cloud computing modalities,

        A set of user interfaces and access devices to optimize the experience of using the services that are available in the network for first level end-users (elderly people)

        A set of software tools to implement services. The tools will be available to social organizations, which will enable them to implement and provide their services through the SOCIALIZE platform.

SOCIALIZE provides information and geared to the needs and interests of older people in a friendly environment without long periods of training and entertainment complex changes. The proposal aims at a simplification of the modalities with which elderly people have access to dedicated services - giving an easier access and faster availability of social organizations services when implemented on the SOCIALIZE platform.

This project has been funded by the Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) programme implemented by 20 EU Member States and 3 Associated States and in addition to the financial contribution of these states has additional funding from the European Community.

Objectives of the WP:

  • Study on ethical and social implication that may arise from the use of mobile social networking in elder community
  • Define end user needs according to their expectations, including economic viability and opportunities and to formulate technical development guidelines.
  • Provide relevant use case scenarios for the SOCIALIZE project, which will be translated into requirements towards the other work packages. Results will be then analysed from a sociological and economic point of view, so as to derive recommendations for the user acceptance of useful and viable applications as well as the development of a business scenarios.
  • Offer feedback to technical partners to guide the realisation of SOCIALIZE System throughout the project trough the definition of the SOCIALIZE platform Framework, study and definition of suitable interface for elder people (which is crucial for the success of the entire project). In the definition of GUI and the software services, is crucial the intervention of experts that operate and have daily contacts with elderly people.

The WP objective is to design and implement a viable architecture and a corresponding middleware implementation for future pervasive computing environments that are open, extensible, adaptive, self-configurable, and self-integrating with the goal of smart environments and make them more programmable and utilisable, translating end user and application requirements into a reference model that is made out of several more specific reference models according to the scenarios and technological indication defined in WP1 and according with certifications and cost constrains, security, confidentiality, data reliability.

The SOCIALIZE system architecture addresses the following key issues:

  • SOCIALIZE infrastructure architecture: Investigate on the different components and devices; design the hardware platform and network infrastructure, research and select the suitable devices for the elderly, specially designed to assist people who have difficulty to perform activities of daily living.
  • Middleware and Gateway architecture;
  • Service and application architecture: identify software requirement and design of specification for: server-centric applications, embedded applications, interoperability middleware;
  • Specialized interface design for elder, that  could cater to cognitive, motor and visual limitations of old age;
  • Security architecture: Investigate about security architecture to ensure the confidentiality of transmitted information across the system.

The objective is to implement, evaluate and validate concepts developed within the SOCIALIZE project as well as provide a set of operational prototypes in order to evaluate the project in a real environment. The WP aims at creating a prototype and test it within the end users communities.
